From the opera "Rigoletto" by Giuseppe Verdi

Programma

An opera by Verdi, with a libretto by Piave and a text by Hugo: no wonder a masterpiece emerged.

A story, a tragedy, in which no character is immune to disguise in order to appear different from himself. A Duke pretending to be a student, a young woman pretending to be a beggar, courtiers wearing the mask of amiability. And above them all: Rigoletto, the Duke's jester. An actor, a man of the theatre, a ridiculous puppet trained by a cruel society to be both accomplice and victim at the same time. But like all great works, if we look closer we also discover that ....Rigoletto is a father: protective but unable to listen; present but locked in silence. A silence that becomes a crack, a wound, a drama. He is, like many of Verdi's heroes, deformed by dark passions and by a destiny that overwhelms him, and only through pain and loss can he rediscover his humanity.

The old Rigoletto could not save his daughter. Perhaps the time has come to listen to the new generations. Perhaps it is they, with their voice, who will save us. And to guide us towards a future of peace, kindness and forgiveness.
