Following the two symphonic cycles devoted to the complete symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven and Felix Mendelssohn presented during the 2026 season, the Maggio’s Music Director, Daniele Gatti, turns to the first of the three operas he will conduct in the 2027 season: a new production of Il trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi, directed by Leo Muscato. The premiere is scheduled for 23 February at 8 p.m., with further performances on 26 February at 8 p.m., 28 February at 3.30 p.m., and 2 March at 8 p.m. The production marks the role debut of Mariangela Sicilia as Leonora. Gabriele Viviani sings the Count di Luna, Valentina Pernozzoli appears as Azucena, Antonio Poli takes on the role of Manrico, and Riccardo Zanellato performs Ferrando. Maestro Gatti’s vision is to present a youthful and deeply Romantic interpretation of Verdi’s masterpiece, remaining true to the fact that the protagonists of the drama are, in essence, young people in their twenties. This Trovatore will depart from the “high-intensity” approach that has often characterized vocal performance traditions, offering instead a reading of greater lyricism, freshness, and emotional authenticity.
