Workplace Safety: Teatro del Maggio Achieves ISO 45001 Certification

The Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is the only Italian opera-symphonic foundation to have obtained ISO 45001 certification for workplace safety, an international standard that specifies the requirements for an occupational health and safety management system.

Florence, 7 February 2026 – The Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino announces that the Foundation – the only one among the 14 Italian opera-symphonic foundations – has been awarded ISO 45001 certification, an international standard that defines the requirements for an occupational health and safety management system.

“Achieving ISO 45001 certification represents a highly significant milestone for the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, confirming the Foundation’s constant commitment to protecting the health and safety of all those who, in various capacities, work daily in our Theatre,” says Superintendent Carlo Fuortes. “Being the only opera-symphonic foundation in Italy to obtain this recognition is a source of great pride and bears witness to the quality of the work carried out, the result of a collective effort involving management, employees, and all the professionals of the Institution. This certification does not represent a finishing line for us, but rather an incentive to continue with determination along the path of continuous improvement of organisational processes and working conditions, in the belief that people’s well-being is a fundamental prerequisite for the artistic and cultural excellence that the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is called upon to guarantee to its audience.”

The main purpose of the standard is to enable organisations to provide safe and healthy workplaces, prevent work-related injuries and illnesses, proactively improve occupational health and safety performance, and eliminate hazards by minimising risks.

ISO 45001 represents the international benchmark standard for occupational health and safety management systems and is based on a structured approach that requires organisations to have a full understanding of their operational context, internal and external factors, and interested parties. The standard also предусматривает an active role for top management, which is required to take responsibility for the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS), together with the involvement and participation of workers at all levels of the organisation. Central to the standard is the adoption of a risk-based thinking approach, supported by thorough and transparent documentation management and periodic internal audits aimed at verifying, over time, the conformity and effectiveness of the adopted system.

ISO 45001 certification is the formal recognition, issued by an accredited third-party body, attesting that an organisation’s occupational health and safety management system complies with the requirements of the international ISO 45001 standard.
