Florence, 16 June 2026 – One of the most eagerly awaited events of the 88th Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Festival is about to begin at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino: the cycle dedicated to the nine symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven, entrusted to the baton of Music Director Daniele Gatti, who will complete this remarkable undertaking over the course of two weeks and four concerts. This “marathon” also serves as a prelude to the Beethoven celebrations of 2027, marking the bicentenary of the great composer’s death.
The first concert, launching an artistic journey that will guide audiences through Beethoven’s majestic symphonic universe, is scheduled for Thursday, 18 June at 8 p.m. in the Mehta Hall. The programme includes the classically inspired Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21, the energetic Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major, Op. 60, and the “dance-like” Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92.
Maestro Gatti, who has already conducted the complete cycle of Beethoven’s nine symphonies with other prestigious institutions and has previously led several of these works with the Orchestra del Maggio, now presents the cycle in its entirety for the first time with the Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. His meticulous and analytical approach, his careful attention to orchestral balance and dynamics, and his essential, uncompromising musical vision make him one of the foremost interpreters of the works of the Bonn master. This project offers audiences a comprehensive and profound perspective on Beethoven’s monumental symphonic repertoire.
Three further concerts complete the cycle dedicated to the genius of Bonn: 23 June (Symphonies No. 5 and No. 6), 28 June (Symphonies No. 2 and No. 3), and 1 July (Symphonies No. 8 and No. 9, featuring soloists Mariangela Sicilia, Eleonora Filipponi, Bernard Richter and Jongmin Park, together with the Chorus directed by Lorenzo Fratini). All concerts begin at 8 pm.
