Orchestral Ensemble of the Academy of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino

The Orchestral Ensemble of the Accademia del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino was established with the aim of offering an artistic residency program designed to provide professional training for orchestral musicians, with a particular focus on operatic practice. Opera is approached not merely as a repertoire, but as a complex musical language that requires specific skills, approaches, and sensitivities.

Opera is not simply “music with singing,” but a complete dramaturgical art form in which the orchestra is far more than mere accompaniment: it is an invisible protagonist of the narrative, capable of supporting, engaging in dialogue, and interacting with the voices in a delicate and dynamic balance.

Within the operatic repertoire, musicians must develop constant awareness of the vocal line, sensitivity to breathing, phrasing, and the singer’s needs, adapting tempo, dynamics, and articulation in real time. Attention to dramaturgy, flexibility in performance, and the ability to “breathe” with the cast—blending into the narrative flow—are essential elements of this art.

The Ensemble therefore represents a space for both artistic and professional growth, open to young instrumentalists from Italy and abroad. In this context, the residency offers selected musicians direct and continuous experience working with opera singers enrolled in the Maria Manetti Shrem Emerging Artists Program (MMSEAP) of the Accademia, a two-year artistic residency for opera singers and pianists selected among the most promising talents at an international level.

A distinctive feature of the project is the synergy between educational activity and artistic practice: alongside formal training, participants are involved in an intensive work experience program. From the very beginning, young musicians engage directly with the production and organizational environment, accompanying high-level performers in a wide range of settings—from study sessions and rehearsals to recitals, chamber concerts, and full opera productions.

Participation in performance activities is an integral part of the training program and enables instrumentalists to develop essential technical, musical, and professional skills required for entering the orchestral profession, as well as a specific sensitivity to the operatic repertoire.

The project is also founded on the collaboration between the Accademia del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. This partnership ensures access to outstanding expertise, infrastructure, and high-level study and production environments, creating a unique ecosystem for the professional development of young musicians.

The Orchestra Members of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, drawing on experience gained on the most prestigious national and international stages, serve as teachers and mentors, guiding young instrumentalists in technical study, orchestral practice, and the rehearsal process. The faculty is further enriched by renowned conductors and established professionals in the field.

The Orchestral Ensemble made its debut in summer 2025 with a touring production of Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performed with the Accademia’s soloists. It has since taken part in several concerts and productions at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Among the engagements scheduled for 2026 are symphonic-vocal concerts and four opera productions, including La danza delle maschere, from Un ballo in maschera by Giuseppe Verdi, once again at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
