Zubin Mehta with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino to conduct the Easter concert in Orvieto

Maestro Zubin Mehta will conduct the Choir and the Orchestra del Maggio in the traditional Easter concert at the Duomo di Orvieto as part of the “Omaggio all’Umbria” project.

The concert will be recorded on Monday 22 March 2021 and then broadcast by Rai Cultura on Rai 1 on Good Friday at 00.40 and in rerun on Rai 5 the following day at 19.35.

Three compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are scheduled: the Symphony in G minor K. 550, the Coronation Mass in C major K. 317 and the motet “Ave verum corpus”.

Florence 17 March 2021 – Maestro Zubin Mehta returns to the Duomo di Orvieto to conduct the Choir and the Orchestra del Maggio in the traditional Easter concert which, in compliance with the limitations imposed for the health emergency, will be recorded behind closed doors on Monday 22 March 2021 and will then be broadcast by Rai Cultura, as a television premiere, on Rai 1 on Good Friday, April 2, at 12.40 am, and in reruns on Saturday 3 April at 19.35 pm on Rai 5. Three compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are scheduled: the Symphony in G minor K. 550, the Coronation Mass in C major K. 317 and the motet “Ave verum corpus”. Soloists: Eva Mei, Francesca Cucuzza, Valentino Buzza and Emanuele Cordaro. Choir Master: Lorenzo Fratini.

The concert inaugurates the new edition of the “Omaggio all’Umbria” project which boasts the high patronage of the President of the Republic, the patronage of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and is organized by Laura Musella. The project includes a series of 19 concerts until next December. Zubin Mehta has participated since 2002 when he directed the workers of the Maggio in the “Concert for peace in the world” at the Basilica Superiore di San Francesco in Assisi.

At the opening of the concert at the Cathedral of Orvieto, the Symphony in G minor K. 550 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: one of his most famous and performed symphonies with an apparent gaiety and instead traversed by dark agitation and continuous tension. It continues with the bright and intense Coronation Mass in C major K. 317, with the voices of the soprano Eva Mei, the mezzo-soprano Francesca Cucuzza, the tenor Valentino Buzza, the bass Emiliano Cordaro, and then closes with the sublime motet “Ave verum corpus “.

In the days following the concert in Orvieto, Maestro Mehta will be in May to continue the rehearsals of two events that will be recorded and subsequently broadcast in streaming: the concert with the violinist Vilde Frang, March 27, and the opera Cosi fan tutte by Wolfgang. Amadeus Mozart directed by Sven-Erich Bechtolf, 28 March. Maestro Zubin Mehta was a great protagonist of the May streaming season with Haydn’s Creation, Verdi’s Otello last November 2020, the ‘unscheduled’ concert that continued the cycle of Schubertian symphonies that began last summer (which already collected more than 16 thousand views) and the concert with pianist Rudolf Buchbinder (still visible in streaming on the Foundation’s website until 10 April with already more than 7 thousand views).
