Florence May 29, 2021 – La forza del destino, four-act melodrama by Giuseppe Verdi with a difficult and dense plot of extraordinarily sublime pages and adapted in its initial version in St. Petersburg to its final draft for 1869, is the second opera title of the 83rd edition of the Festival del Maggio Musicale after the inaugural Adriana Lecouvreur and immediately before Claudio Monteverdi’s Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria and the last opera, in July, Siberia by Umberto Giordano. The “Forza” has been conducted several times by maestro Zubin Mehta, the first in 1992, then in 2007, in 2010 and on tour in Tokyo in 2011. Carlus Padrissa is the director, of the La Fura dels baus company who with maestro Zubin Mehta had made an historic, and enormously successful, Wagnerian Teatralogy, starting in 2007.
In the cast, composed of Toni Gradsack: Saioa Hernández (Leonora), Annalisa Stroppa (Preziosilla), Roberto Aronica (Don Alvaro), Amartuvshin Enkhbat (Don Carlo), Ferruccio Furlanetto (Father Guardian), Nicola Alaimo (Fra Melitone), Alessandro Spina (Marquis of Calatrava), Leonardo Cortellazzi (Mastro Trabuco), Valentina Corò (Curra), Francesco Samuele Venuti (an alcade), Roman Lyulkin (a surgeon) and then the soloists of the Chorus Ferruccio Finetti, Leonardo Melani, Luca Tamani. Master Zubin Mehta says: “In La forza del destino by Giuseppe Verdi, we find a bit of everything, there is naturally love, as well as in all his works, history, but also racial prejudice, war, and buffoonery of Fra Melitone. Only Verdi’s genius could conceive a story like this with all these levels with each other. In this staging by Carlus Padrissa of La Fura del Baus, a genius with whom I have been collaborating for years, we field a cast with great singers, world voices who are able to embody every role and are very happy to work with all of them!”
“La forza del destino, Verdi’s unnameable work, for superstitious reasons, has a very complex structure due to the coexistence of often conflicting themes: love and death; revenge and forgiveness, deriving from religious sentiment; drama and comedy, but about an inexorable destiny that crushes all the characters in the opera “says Carlus Padrissa. “The two lovers Leonora and Alvaro are trapped by the force of destiny, two stars that, when they collide, form a black hole and lose their light. And fate is like a black hole into which we fall. The two stars are indeed Leonora and Alvaro; their meeting will generate a black hole (which will be seen at the beginning of the work) and from this black hole gravitational waves will be generated, like a stone thrown into water, which will affect the whole work by triggering links between the present, the past and the future up to its ending which appears as a fatality. This is an Italian and Catalan production – continues Padrissa – and working at the Maggio is always a pleasure and above all with Zubin Mehta whom we of the Fura consider our godfather and being in Florence is extraordinary, for me it is a truly magical city. ”
In the cast, in one of the most difficult textures composed by Verdi, in her debut in the role of Leonora, Saoia Hernàndez says: “Leonora is a woman persecuted by her brother, cursed by her father, who lives like a hermit who eventually dies in due to dramatic circumstances and fate; for me to interpret her in her torments, in four arias is very demanding but it is a joy to sing with Zubin Mehta, under the direction of Carlus Padrissa, and at the Maggio Musicale. ”
In the impervious role of Don Alvaro, Roberto Aronica, who returns in a Verdi role at Maggio, after Don Carlo (directed by Giancarlo Del Monaco) of the 80th Festival (2017), also directed by Zubin Mehta. “Don Alvaro is a fought, proud and noble character of royal lineage”, says Aronica, “he is a character with many facets; amorous but at the same time heroic and in interpreting him it is necessary to convey the various aspects of this character that make him difficult, a stumbling block, in the career of a tenor. ”
The baritone Amartuvshin Enkhbat, in the role of Don Carlo, makes his debut at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino: “I feel very comfortable in the Verdi roles to which I am very attached. I feel Verdi very close to my heart; I am very happy and proud to debut in Florence in May and to be part of such an important production with Zubin Mehta and in this setting. ”
“Although I already sang at the old Teatro Comunale about 10 years ago, I consider this occasion my double debut thanks to the” new “Teatro del Maggio and the role of Preziosilla that I sing for the first time ever” – says Annalisa Stroppa – “I am very honored that this happens with the conduction of Zubin Mehta and it is a pleasure to play this character, in a non-traditional but original role, in the reading of Carlus Padrissa, and yet which fully maintains its essence. The peculiarity of Preziosilla, unlike Azucena, is that a character who is particularly characterized by Verdi, young, full of energy, a commoner, is a leader who incites the soldiers and encourages them, she is a great speaker. It’s a very beautiful, very colorful, captivating role. He is a character who comes from a Donizetti heritage, such as that of Fra Melitone, therefore from an earlier repertoire which however opens up to the great one, the great Verdi repertoire.”
“First of all it is clear how happy I am to be here in Florence for this opera and with the master Zubin Mehta” says Ferruccio Furlanetto, who plays the Father Guardian. “As for the role, that of the Father Guardian, it accompanies me from the beginning of my career: it was one of the first things that Maestro Ettore Campogalliani had made me learn to participate in the competitions or concerts that he organized and always, I’m talking about the duet with the soprano, it’s a song that has given me many, many emotions; since I was a child. I am delighted to be able to play this role again: the last time I supported him was 2 years ago at Covent Garden in London, and it was very pleasant and certainly will be here too. ”
Nicola Alaimo, Fra Melitone, is: “overjoyed to return to the Maggio”, indeed almost without having left him after having masterfully interpreted Michonnet in Adriana Lecouvreur; “Fra Melitone is a character who is part of my top ten” says Alaimo “one of those characters, among the many I have played, who left a mark on me; coincidence has it that I made my debut in this role in 2007 with the master Mehta and right here in Maggio; Fra Melitone is an exuberant character a little forerunner of Falstaff, a funny grumpy; Verdi in this dramatic masterpiece compensates for the dark tones of the opera with these bright strokes that lighten the plot a little. ”
Alessandro Spina, at his fourth participation in just over a month at the Maggio, after Adriana, and the two Tosca – the recitation of Florence and Salzburg – in La forza del destino is the Marquis of Calatrava, Leonora’s father: “I am delighted to be back on the Maggio stage, conducted by maestro Zubin Mehta and with extraordinary colleagues. The work with Carlus Padrissa on the Marquis of Calatrava was very interesting, he built a different character on me and for this I thank him: the father, as we think he is, is a good figure who protects, in this direction he is heavy. and always vigilant and does not leave his daughter free in any way. ”
“I am very proud to be part of this project” says Leonardo Cortellazzi who plays Mastro Trabuco. “This work has many contrasts, already in the libretto there is in fact both the drama and the lightness also underlined by my character and by that of Fra Melitone; in this staging you will see a contrast, so to speak, between the great musical work done by Zubin Mehta, who will make us listen to a masterfully directed Verdi almost as if it were a perfect record, and the directorial one of Carlus Padrissa which is a ‘ explosion of novelty and provocation. I hope that the public can enjoy these avant-garde and stimulating elements. “
